Guidance Sessions

What Are Guidance Sessions?

Having a family member with newly diagnosed Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia can be confusing and exhausting. Not only are you trying to figure out treatment options for your loved ones with the diagnosis, but you are also trying to protect them from impulsive behaviors that may potentially be risky and scary. Often times, caring family members may just be trying to figure out what to expect in an acute manic and/or psychotic episode and strategies to take in dealing with these manifestations.

Dr. Frank Chen has been a Board Certified Psychiatrist since 2002. He has worked throughout his career in acute care psychiatric inpatient hospital dealing with some of the most challenging patients with Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia and has been managing the continuum of treatment of these individuals on an outpatient basis. In addition, he has dealt with these diagnoses as a family member for the entirety of his career as a Psychiatrist. He understands on a deeply personal level the challenges of family members who are trying to do their best in rendering aid to struggling loved ones.

What Can I Expect?

The Initial Expert Guidance Session is 1 hour. These Expert Guidance Sessions are not meant to be an Initial Diagnostic Session. They are not meant to be a Second Opinion Session with a review of records to provide diagnostic clarification. They are not meant to be a venue for family sessions to discuss conflicts. Family members interested in the Guidance Session needs to have relative certainty about the diagnosis and be prepared with their questions about dilemma related to behavior and treatment. Dr. Chen can go through education about the diagnosis, expectations of manifested symptoms, standard treatment options, and resources. Subsequent Expert Guidance Sessions can be requested in increments of 30 minutes. The Expert Guidance Sessions are meant for family members to have a resource for expanded discussions about treatment options but are not intended to provide direct treatment. Individuals who are receiving treatment may attend to gain insight through education; however, these sessions are not meant to dispute diagnosis, discuss conflicts amongst family members, or to evaluate past or present treatment in the form of a second opinion.
